Teaching the original form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy was developed by Dr Albert Ellis in 1955. As such, it was the first form of cognitive behavioural therapy to be developed. It stemmed from Dr Ellis’s keen interest in philosophy, most notably the ancient Stoic philosophers, and his recognition of the limited application of more traditional forms of psychotherapy.

From his interest in the philosophical writings about human suffering and the human condition, Dr Ellis surmised that individuals, all individuals, are competent at disturbing themselves by irrational thinking patterns.

The Centre for REBT at the University of Birmingham was developed by Professor Peter Trower and Dr Jason Jones to teach REBT in the United Kingdom in the same way it is taught at the Albert Ellis Institute. The Centre for REBT at the University of Birmingham is the only training centre in the United Kingdom accredited by the Albert Ellis Institute. Over the coming years we will be developing further course in REBT and reporting on our ongoing research programme.

Currently we offer two accredited courses. Both of these courses are aimed at individuals who already have a core profession in psychology, counselling, psychotherapy or other allied mental health professions. Our primary certificate takes place over three days and includes live demonstrations of REBT and twelve hours of supervised peer counselling. We believe that the best way to learn REBT is by doing it and we have found that students value the peer counselling sessions more than any other part of the training. We also offer an Advanced certificate which follows the same lines as the primary certificate and includes a further twelve hours of supervised peer counselling.

We also believe in continuing to support individuals who undertake training in REBT. We offer a monthly peer supervision group that is free to individuals who have undertaken one of our training programmes.
